Nong Khai is Thailand's gateway to Vientiane. The first Friendship Bridge, opened in 1994, crosses the Mekong west of town, and since 2024 the train from Bangkok runs on to Khamsavath station on the Lao side. The town faces the river: a long promenade, Tha Sadet market, temples on the bank. Most people stay a day or two, for the Sala Keoku sculpture park and, to the west, the river road to Sangkhom.

Yes, by train: leave Nong Khai at 8:35 am, arrive at Khamsavath at 9:05; return at 6:25 pm, arriving in Nong Khai at 6:55. Allow for the Lao visa on each entry, and formalities on both sides.
Do you need to fill in an online form to cross the border?
Yes, both ways. For Laos, the digital immigration form has been required at the first Friendship Bridge since September 1, 2025, within three days before arrival. Back into Thailand, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) has been mandatory since May 1, 2025, including by land.
How long can you stay in Thailand without a visa?
Up to 30 days for US and French tourists since September 15, 2026, down from 60, according to the Thai embassies. French travelers are limited to two visa-free entries per calendar year. A round trip to Vientiane counts as a new entry.
