Vientiane

The Lao capital stretches along the Mekong, facing Thailand. A low-rise, quiet city: 16th- and 19th-century temples, the Patuxai arch and, in the evening, the night market on the riverbank.

In September 2024 the river rose to 13.24 m here, above the 1966 and 2008 floods; the embankment protected the centre, and a new section was completed in July 2026. The city welcomed 2.2 million visitors in 2025. Since 2026 the tourism office has listed 30,000 kip as the foreigners' entry fee at the main sites.

Vientiane FAQ

Can you use the Laos e-visa when arriving in Vientiane?
Yes: the e-visa, valid for 30 days, is issued online in 3 working days and works at Wattay, the Friendship Bridge and Khamsavath; a visa on arrival is also available. The online arrival form is mandatory.
Where did the National Museum go?
It left the centre in 2017 for Xaythany district, about 6 km out. The new Lao Art Museum, opened in January 2025 in the same district, charges foreigners $10.
Is Vientiane safe?
Fairly, but France's foreign ministry reported in September 2026 a sharp rise in bag and phone snatching by motorbike riders, night-time robberies and drink spiking. Carry your bag on the side away from the road and watch your drink.
