Traveling in Isaan and northern Thailand along the Mekong

The Mekong doesn't cross Thailand, it runs along it: in the north, from the Golden Triangle to Chiang Khong, then all along Isaan, facing Laos. 7 riverside stops, far from the usual tours.

Isaan and northern Thailand travel questions

Do you need a visa for Thailand?
Not for a tourist stay of up to 30 days: that has been the rule since September 15, 2026, down from 60 days. You can extend once by 30 days in Thailand. Fill in the free TDAC digital arrival card before you arrive. If you enter several times by land, from Laos for example, visa-free entries are limited to two per calendar year.
Do you need a visa to cross into Laos over a Friendship Bridge?
Yes. US travelers need a visa for Laos: either a $50 e-Visa, applied for in advance on the official portal and accepted at Bridges I, II and IV, or a visa on arrival at the checkpoint, paid in US dollars. It allows a 30-day stay. The visa on arrival has no official published fee: travelers paid around $40 in 2026.
How much time should you allow for Isaan along the Mekong?
5 to 7 days from Nong Khai to Khong Chiam: 1 to 2 days each in Nong Khai and Nakhon Phanom, then Mukdahan and the Mun confluence. Nakhon Phanom to Mukdahan is a short 1.5-hour minibus ride; allow about 4 hours from Nong Khai to Nakhon Phanom.
