Chiang Saen was founded in 1329 by Saenphu, grandson of King Mangrai: a rectangle of about 3 km by 1.4 km, closed by a moat on three sides and the Mekong on the fourth, with five gates and eight watchtowers. Sacked in 1803 and then abandoned for a century, the town keeps its earth ramparts and dozens of brick temples. Its commercial port handled 7,010 containers in 2026, up from 4,030 in 2025, driven by Thai durian exported to China.

Wat Pa Sak

Just outside the ramparts, this temple with its square chedi takes its name from the 300 teak trees planted at its founding, which sources date between 1295 and the 1340s. Tall trees still shade the brick ruins.

Its 88 m octagonal chedi is the town's tallest structure. In front stands a bronze statue of King Saenphu, the founder, seated with a sword across his knees.

The river and the Yunnan cargo boats

Boats from China dock at Chiang Saen port. The river level here depends on Chinese dams: in early January 2021, water held back at the Jinghong dam made it drop about 1 m in two days, and China only gave notice six days later.

Don Sao, one foot in Laos: boats cross from the Golden Triangle to the Lao island of Don Sao, open without a visa for a short visit for a token entry fee; your passport stays at the Thai checkpoint. No recent fares are published: agree on the price of the crossing before boarding.

Chiang Saen FAQ

Is the Golden Triangle dangerous?
Across from Sop Ruak, on the Lao side, the Kings Romans casino special economic zone has been under US sanctions since 2018, and scam centres there were raided in 2024 and 2025. Be very careful around the zone. France's foreign ministry also formally advises against the whole Thai border with Myanmar, Mae Sot excepted: Sop Ruak and Mae Sai sit on that border.
Is the National Museum open every day?
No: Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday, Tuesday and public holidays. Entry is 100 baht for foreigners.
Can you rent a bike?
Yes, on the main street, for about 50 baht a day.
