Jinghong was founded in 1180 as Chiang Hung, capital of the Tai kingdom of Sipsongpanna. Today it is the seat of the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, a county-level city of 642,737 people at the 2020 census, on the Lancang, the Chinese Mekong. Just north, the 108 m Jinghong dam, commissioned between 2008 and 2010, is the last of the Chinese cascade before the border: its releases change the river level all the way to Thailand.

Jinghong FAQ

Can you visit without a visa?
With the 240-hour visa-free transit, if you arrive from one country and leave for another: it is valid at the Mohan rail port, not the road crossing, and Xishuangbanna is within the area where you may stay. Otherwise most visitors need a visa.
What time do you really reach Laos?
Departures from China are in Beijing time and arrivals in Laos in local time, one hour earlier: the D87 leaving at 11:30 am reaches Luang Prabang at 2:54 pm Lao time.
How much is Wild Elephant Valley?
Sources disagree, from 54 to 65 yuan, and none is official. The valley is about forty kilometres north and opens from 8 am to 6 pm.
